Re-purposing Materials for a Deck Reno

We know the phrase is often overused, but it’s still true: newer isn’t always better. Our clients were happy to learn this during our latest project: the renovation of their deck and the creation of a new patio area.

When the clients first moved into their house the deck was already looking worn out and dated. Now, five years later it was starting to become unsafe; the stairs were rotting out and the surrounding “fencing” was coming loose, posing a fall hazard if anyone were to lean against it.

Though the clients would have liked to replace the deck, their budget didn’t allow for a new wooden one. Instead, we discussed replacing it with a crushed stone patio and simply adding a new, larger wooden staircase.

However, upon closer inspection we discovered that the deck itself was still in great condition (even if the top looked worn out). We convinced our clients to let us to clean and repurpose the deck instead, giving them the look of a new wooden deck while saving them money!

As you can see, simply power washing the deck has made a huge difference. Once it is sanded down further and a clear top coat added, it will mimic the colour of the surrounding fence while holding up to the foot traffic of a young family.

When it comes to wood, even if the surface looks cracked and worn the integrity and strength of the wood is often still there – even after many years. Having a professional look at your fence, deck, or siding will let you know if it does need to be replaced or if the surface just needs to be refinished, potentially saving you thousands of dollars!
