Reviving Your Lawn

Reviving Your Lawn

One flake at a time it seems the snow is on its way out, and reviving your lawn should be your next project.  At the end of fall and over the winter, our yards take one hell of a beating.  There are the leaves and other debris that make their way down in October and November (you’ll never get them all).  There is the devastating snow that packs the earth and roots of your lawn throughout the winter seasons.  Especially during thaw and re-freezing cycles.  Not to mention the salty sandy mix that makes its way from the road onto your front yard.  Now I know after reading such a detailed description of horror you are asking yourself “How do I revive my yard?” The answer comes in three stages.  Each as important as the last.

Let’s start with the clean-up.  Specifically lawn sweeping.  Over the course of the year your lawn undergoes some pretty drastic changes.  Some years we see temperatures go from plus 40 degrees in the summer, to 40 below zero in the winter.  Coupled with some of the other factors mentioned above, some of your grass dies.  This dead grass (thatch), these fallen Heroes of a once beautiful yard, lay beside and on top of the surviving blades and proceed to suffocate them.  They suffocate them from air, from light, and other nutrients.  By employing a lawn sweeper, you effectively remove the thatch that is preventing the healthy blades from prospering.  The sweeper uses a rotating brush that is designed to pull the thatch while leaving the living grass alone.

After the compression and freezing of the frigid winter, the soil under your lawn can turn as hard as bedrock.  This prevents water and air from properly absorbing into the earth to be taken up by this year’s crop of grass.  And, it also limits roots from freely spreading and taking hold.  At this point an Aerator is used.  As it makes passes across your yard, it punches holes into the ground allowing for water and air to make its journey through the earth.  It also allows space for the roots to root making for a lush and thick landscape.aerator

Finally, your grass is hungry.  Your lawn is a living, breathing, drinking and eating thing!  At this point in the year it is craving nutrients.  Make sure you are giving it the boost it needs to get a jump start on the growing seasons.  Fertilize your lawn.  This is one of the most simple, and usually most often blundered services for your yard.  Too often we see the tell tail signs of an over fertilized yard.  Sure, multivitamins are great, but imagine taking way too many of them.  The same goes for your lawn.  The right balance of nutrients, and the right amount are essential to avoid a costly mistake.IMG_4581

This Spring Harbourview is offering any one of these services, and if you bundle them up (which if you have read to this point it is obviously recommended) you save time and money.  Individually we offer any one of these services (Sweeping, Aerating, Fertilizing) starting at $64.95, but if you bundle  you will save.
