Having the Right Tools

Having the right tools for the job.

When you’re tackling a renovation project it’s important that you have the skills and know-how as well as the right tools to get it done.  They say “a bad workman always blames his tools”.  One way to get over that hurdle is to make sure that the tools you are using are designed for the job you’re doing.

It may sound like a no brainer but don’t use something for one thing, if it was designed for something else.  I’m sure I sound like a stickler to some, but don’t use your screwdriver as a chisel.  Don’t use drill bits for wood to bore through metal.  Using a knife to pry something apart is akin to putting diesel in a car that runs on gasoline.  Not only are you risking damage to the tool you are using, but you are risking damage to the rest of your project and even yourself.  Safety first, second, and third.  As corny as it sounds the best tool at your disposal is your own brain.

Now that you have the correct means to your end, make sure it’s in good working order.  Sharp knives cut more people than dull ones.  How so?  A dull knife will slip off of the thing you want to cut and end up cutting you.  So get sharpening, tighten screws, lubricate, and clean everything you can before putting it into use.  A visual inspection is always recommended before getting into a new project.

At this point it’s likely that your tools have been good to you.  Be good to them and put them back in their homes.  This is a good opportunity to do some preventative maintenance on them so you are ready to go for next time.  Having things in their right place will let you find them faster and free up your work space.  If you’re done using it, clean it up and put it away.  I can’t tell you how many hours I have wasted just looking around the shop for something minor I need to finish the job.
