Blue Monday

Blue Monday

Blue Monday is commonly referred to as the saddest day of the year.  This year it’s Jan 15th.  Usually falling on the third Monday of January this culminates a perfect storm of little negativities that build up to one big sad.  Let’s look at some of the contributing factors and how to combat them to keep your Blue Monday a little less blue.

Speaking of “sad”, one of the bigger contributing factors to a Blue Monday is S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder).  Seasonal Affective disorder is a type of depression that coincides with the changing seasons.  Lack of sunlight, staying indoors, and cold weather can do a number on your body’s natural cycles.  It can sap your energy making you feel more tired and moody.  Mid-January tends to be that sweet spot when it peaks, and you haven’t quite gotten used to the affects.  For most of us this isn’t anything too serious.  Usually a cup of coffee and a fresh outlook will do the trick.  But if you’re chronically affected, you can try phototherapy, vitamin D supplements, or see your doctor.  Good thing seeing your doctor has no upfront cost.

Money is another provider of sadness to your Blue Monday.  More specifically a lack of money.  Around this time of year, for most people, credit card payments are due after holiday spending.  It can add up quick and offer you a swift unexpected punch in the face.  They say that money is the most common and disruptive topic that couples argue about.  The old adage is “failing to plan is planning to fail”.  Now I know that doesn’t help you now if you have a crippling Christmas debt in front of you, but planning for next year will help.  And keep in mind that this happens every year.  The number goes up and it goes down, money comes and money goes, just be sure to keep a positive outlook.

Cheer up.  Spring will come faster than you expect. A big part of what makes Blue Monday sad is perspective.  The holidays are over, it’s back to the grind, and a crappy commute in winter weather.  Don’t sweat the small stuff.  People develop a poor attitude and turn into hermits only adding to the cabin fever!  Get outside and embrace the cold air.  Go skiing, go sledding, go skating, get active and have some fun doing it.  The winter holidays were only a few weeks ago and not much has changed, but I’ll bet you had a great time.   Keep your outlook bright and continue to share good times with the people that are closest to you and make your Blue Monday a thing of the past.
